HT #2
In this weeks readings, our group focused primarily on an excerpt from "Activists beyond Borders." The quote from the reading that stated "Governments are the primary "guarantors" of rights, but also their primary violators" created a strong discussion within our group members. We discussed the problems with governments globally, and also focused our comments on the governments of China and North Korea. In our campaign about human trafficking, one of the questions we are interested in answering speaks to the involvement of both the Chinese and north Korean government and whether or not they are actively participating in the prevention and action against human trafficking. In regards to the quote we took from the reading, we all could agree that governments are responsible for advocating for human rights, however, they are often violators of these rights. Their violations may not always be obvious in that they are denying rights to others, but instead, they may be violations due to their lack of action. From this idea, our group is interested in what the 2 governments are doing today, and whether they are more of guarantors or violators of human rights for their citizens.
